I would like to tell you about a perfect evening we had in Dennis recently because I think it combines some of the best elements that the Cape has to offer. We had always driven by this cute little restaurant, always full of diners, called Gina's By The Sea on our way to Chapin's beach in Dennis. This time at around 6pm we decided to check it out so we turned in the driveway and was immediately met by a guy who said that he would take our car for us. We gave him the keys right away and then as an afterthought asked some other people also walking in if he was indeed the valet - they assured us laughing and said "first time at Gina's?" Entering this small place we were warmly greeted by the host who told us to wait in the busy bar and he would seat us soon. The restaurant looked like it has been an old Cape house and upon looking up at the rafters, we spied dozens of shoes stuck up there. Interesting.... We are seated pretty quickly and upon telling our waitress that this was our first time at Gina's she immediately gave us her plan on the perfect meal that would allows us to try some of the best they offered. After a ten minute list of what she thought we should order, the waitress joked "Good...now I will get your waitress for you..." Later during the wonderful meal, we asked her what all the shoes in the rafters were for and she replied that they were for a certain loyal patron who came most nights but vowed to never wear shoes in the summer so to accommodate him and the dress code, the restaurant always had a pair for him that he would leave in the rafters upon leaving for the evening after his meal. You would only get stories like that in a place that has been there since the 1930's...so old Cape... After a wonderful italian meal paired with a hearty chianti we left full and happy and drove the short distance over to Chapin's beach in time to see the spectacular sunset dip into the vast ocean along with others lined up along the edge of the road.
Quirky, authentic, delicious, funny and beautiful - a perfect evening on the Cape.
